“At the moment, there are no vaccinators,” said Asen Medzhdiev, who temporarily holds the position of Minister of Health, in an interview on state television.
“Huge amounts” of expired vaccine have already been destroyed, and an additional 2.8 million doses need to be disposed of this year, he said.
He told the European Commission that Bulgaria wants to end the contract with BioNTech/Pfizer, according to which his country is obliged to buy the vaccine against the coronavirus until 2025, Medzhdiev said.
This position is supported by Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, he said.
Bulgaria has the lowest vaccination rate in the European Union. Only 30 percent of the population of 6.5 million have basic immunization against the virus, according to official data. There have been no mandatory protective measures against the virus since mid-November 2022.
