Uzbekistan Presidential Election: Shavkat Mirziyoyev Re-Elected as President With Over 87 Percent of the Vote


Sunday’s re-election of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to a third term until 2030 gives him the chance to advance economic reforms he set in place for the Central Asian country. Our reporter Feng Yilei has more.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev has secured a third consecutive term as the president of Uzbekistan.

The incumbent President swept to a landslide victory in Sunday’s presidential election, with over 87 percent of the vote, higher than that in the previous election in 2021.

Voter turnout reached 79 percent.

Mirziyoyev has pledged to further advance reforms in fostering economic openness.

In the first quarter of this year, Uzbekistan’s economy experienced a high growth rate of 5.5 percent.

The country set an ambitious goal to reach over 160 billion USD of GDP for the year 2030, and to double foreign direct investments to 20 billion USD.

Officials say a lot of initiatives proposed by President Mirziyoyev could be more effectively implemented after the elections.
