World Deaf Wrestling Championships Start in Bishkek


The Minister of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy Altynbek Maksutov opened the World Greco-Roman & Freestyle Wrestling Championshipsamong hard of hearing and deaf athletes.

He noted in his speech that this world championship is being held in Kyrgyzstan for the first time. He added that Kyrgyz surdosport has a 15-year history.

“Surdosport was revived in Kyrgyzstan in 2007, with the support of President of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf Donalda Ammons. The Organization of Sports Movement of Deaf Persons of the Kyrgyz Republic was created, which is still successfully headed by Aram Akopian,” Maksutov said.

He noted that with the support of the state, surdosport reaches the surdlympic level and takes part in many major international competitions, world and Asian championships.

The final fights among juniors took place during the event, which were accompanied by an awards ceremony.

The championship started on September 2. In total, 250 athletes from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bulgaria, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Mongolia, USA, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Estonia take part in the championship.

16 wrestlers represent Kyrgyzstan at the championship.

The championship will end on September 12.
