Russian Hackers Attack Mobile Devices of the Ukrainian Military

Cybersecurity officials from the United States and four other countries issued a warning.

Russian hackers are attempting to steal information vital to Ukraine’s ongoing counter-offensive.

To do this, they use malware to attack Android-based mobile devices belonging to the Ukrainian military.

US cybersecurity officials and their counterparts in Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand issued a warning about the Infamous Chisel malware.

The program scans files, monitors communications and “periodically steals sensitive information.”

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency (CISA) described the program as “a set of components that provide constant access to an infected Android device, which periodically collect and display information about the victim.”

The agency’s report, released Thursday, provides technical details of the Russian campaign.

Officials warned that the malware could be used against other targets.

According to CISA Assistant Executive Director Eric Goldstein, the warning reflects the need for all organizations to take action “to identify and mitigate the consequences of Russian cyber activity.”

It also highlights the importance of “a constant focus on maintaining operational resilience in all conditions,” Goldstein said.

According to a report by the US and its allies, the malware is designed to stay on the system. This is achieved by replacing the source code with another, external code that is not directly related to the malware itself.
