Kazakhstan Plans to Terminate Bed Tax

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Kazakhstan has urgently decided to terminate the bed tax, Vice Minister of Tourism Yerzhan Erkinbaev said during a briefing at the central communications service on Friday.

“We have decided that the bed tax must be terminated. It is inconvenient for both domestic business and visiting foreign tourists,” Erkinbaev said.

About 500 million tenge have been collected through this tax so far, according to the Vice Minister. However, the decision was made to terminate the tax.

“We will make changes to the law as soon as possible. Today we believe that we should completely cancel the bed tax,” he said.

The tax for foreigners was enshrined in law in 2021. Aktoty Raimkulova, who then held the post of Minister of Culture and Sports, said the tax is needed “to find additional sources of local budget to promote regional tourism potential in both domestic and foreign markets.”

It was decided to replace the interest rate of the tourist tax with a fixed one in March 2023.
