Uzbek media reports that a government delegation will visit Afghanistan later this year to discuss the Qosh Tepa canal – a water canal built in Afghanistan to channel water from the Amu River to other parts of the country.

The governor of the Surkhandarya region, Ulugbek Kosimov, was quoted in the report as saying that although the canal was built from a point on Afghanistan’s border with Tajikistan, it would impact all countries in the river basin.

“So far they [Afghanistan] have not opened the canal. Construction work is not finished. However, whether we like it or not, there will be an impact on [the volume of water available to Central Asian countries], there will be a reduction. This development will also require large funds. “Before that, this issue will be considered at the government level,” said Kosimov, as reported by Tolo News (20/10/2023).

Earlier, officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan said that Afghanistan respects the rights of all neighboring countries from the Amu River and they have nothing to worry about.
