Tajikistan and European Partners Review Progress in Uranium Cleanup Projects

Tajikistan and its European partners convened in London to discuss efforts in cleaning up uranium legacy sites and improving radioactive waste management. The meeting took place during the Annual Assembly of Contributors to the Environmental Remediation Account (ERA) for Central Asia, organized by the EBRD.

Deputy Minister Aziz Nazar led the Tajik delegation, engaging with key figures such as Adriaan van der Meer, Chair of the ERA Assembly, and Esther Harlander, Head of the ERA for Central Asia. Discussions focused on ongoing and future projects aimed at rehabilitating uranium-contaminated sites and mitigating environmental risks.

Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan also held joint talks to strengthen coordination under the ERA framework. The three countries exchanged ideas on improving their collaboration to address the environmental damage caused by uranium mining legacies.

In addition, the Tajik delegation met with donor states and organizations to explore further cooperation. Key topics included supporting the IAEA’s Strategic Master Plan for uranium site cleanup and expanding international partnerships to advance these efforts.

The discussions highlighted the importance of regional collaboration and international backing in tackling the long-term environmental and safety challenges posed by uranium mining in Central Asia.
